This a cute and easy top to sew. The reason I sewed this top is because one of our PFS Members wanted to know how to rotate a full bust adjustment to the neckline for this kind of pattern. I needed a new top, and she needed the information so we had a win-win situation. The video information could be found here for all PFS Elite Members.

Before I say anything else – I want to warn you about your fabric choice. If you choose a knit that is not stable enough, you will have really bad droopy wrinkles between the bust area – How do I know? It happened to me – I used some knit fabric I had in my stash, and boy did this look bad? I will definitely stick to the pattern recommendations from now on. Because the fabric was so heavy and stretchy it really made the front look bad. (I think I’m the only teacher who actually share her disasters with the world – But hey, this is how we all learn from each others mistakes. Don’t worry I did sew another one that fits PERFECTLY)

When you look at the top on the right you will see A LOT of drooping going on, what I did in this top was I pushed the gathers really close to each other. But on the left side I spread the gathers a bit more evenly across the bust, which did not create as much of the droopiness.

I then decide to see what will happen if I sew the blouse up, only with my broad back and high round adjustments, eliminating the full bust adjustment. I really like how this worked out for me. I will sew one more top with the added fullness at the bust in the recommended knit fabric. – But I have wear this top to work, and received a lot of compliments. One lady even ask me to sew one for her.

Please excuse the tissue in my hand I forgot to put it down. I’m feeling a little under the weather struggling with some bug.

The one thing I did differently to this top that is not in the instruction sheet: I added a very soft interfacing to the neckline, Just cut a template form your neckline front and back and add your 5/8″ plus 3/8″ for the width. Fuse it to the neckline this will stabilize the neck and it make top-stitching so much easier. If you have any questions about this technique please visit the forum or post your question here.

I’m sure we all have a top, blouse or dress which don’t have a bust dart. The question is how do you add to the bust without adding a bust or shoulder dart? For this demonstration I have used New Look N6598.

It is quick and easy to do a full bust adjustment on a top with no bust dart. The main thing to remember is that this adjustment could not be bigger than 3/4″ which will give you a 1&1/2″ full bust adjustment.

Learn to sew a knit top – quick and easy – I love this little top from Pati Palmer. I used a Slinky Knit for this pattern – It sewed up in about 60 minutes which include the time to fabric fit as I sew. I will most definitely sew this top again.

Here is the first video on preparing the bodice for fit – It is very important that you use scotch magic tape when you tape around the armholes and neck, making sure that the tape overlap each other – you don’t want your tissue to tear when you fit it on. Any other tape will turn hard when you iron you pattern.

How to Fit the Back

After preparing your tissue paper it is time to fit the back.
You always start to fit the back first, not just for tops, but in everything else as well.

In this video we will:

Fit the armhole – you want the armhole to sit smooth with no gapping – you also want to check the size of your armhole, most of the times I don’t have a problem with my armholes, but some ladies have to change the size of theirs.

We also check to see if the neckline is where it’s suppose to be, we also want to make sure we have enough fabric for our back, and that our center back and the pattern center back come together.

You will learn how to check your neckline, always read the pattern for this measurement.

You will also learn how to add tissue for a a broad back alteration.

How to do a High Round Back Adjustment

The easiest way to fit your neckline is to wear a light or thin necklace – do not wear something with a pendant as this will cause the chain the sit higher than it should. -

How do you know if you need a High Round Back Adjustment – the center of the pattern will not reach the chain (remember this is for shirt like pattern – some necklines are lower).

The other pointer will be if your tops/dresses pull toward the back of your shoulders, and the neckline in front will be too high.
